Ubicomp beyond Devices:
Objects, People, Space and Meaning

Physical objects, other people, and their spatial configurations in our immediate surroundings carry meaning and may reveal our intentions as well as likely future actions. We believe that Ubicomp design may profit from analysing and interpreting such spatial configurations. In our workshop we will therefore extend the traditional concept of “spatial context” in Ubicomp by shifting the focus to what “spatial context” actually means to humans, not machines. Such a conceptual expansion brings new challenges for interactive systems to (1) sense, (2) understand, and (3) react to the spatial environment including digital and non-digital objects as well as human actors.
